About our Avionics Shop - Heli-One's Avionics Advantage

Heli-One is a one stop repair shop - what does that mean? It means that operators can have all their maintenance services delivered by one provider: Heli-One. For example, if a major component comes into the shop the majority of the work can be done in-house (including materials testing, painting, testing) rather than being outsourced to other vendors. Some services must be outsourced but Heli-One has secured the capabilities to do many MRO activities on-site, which shortens project times and lowers overall cost. One example of this is the Avionics workshop at Heli-One Norway. The Avionics shop supports other departments by providing key maintenance, testing, and installation for the electrical components in a helicopter. Their services are required from nearly every other shop including Airframes and Engines. From flight displays to fuel indicators, the shop's work is evident everywhere in a helicopter.

The Avionics shop is spacious with different rooms and stations for repair work and testing. Some environments are carefully controlled to ensure static electricity does not interfere with equipment. Work stations are neatly organized but full of projects, which to the untrained eye looks like a mess of wires and circuit boards. But to these trained technicians, they are complex electrical puzzles waiting to be solved. Combined, the team has hundreds of years of experience working with radars, generators, radios, batteries, and transceivers (to name a few). The wide range of maintenance services being performed in this workshop support the wider MRO operations and have a pivotal role in many projects, regardless of shop. Many team members have been working at the shop for decades and carry with them the experience of working in both analogue and digital worlds and the advantage of being able to transition easily between both.

The shop has unique Level 3 component repair capability which means technicians are able to perform repair on the individual components in the larger component - which means cost-saving opportunities (less scrap, fewer replacements). As the department services such a wide variety of components and OEMs there is significant cross-over knowledge sharing and technicians bring to each project decades of repair and performance experience. Customers benefit from this by shorter turnaround times and more thorough condition and testing reports for detailed transparency on work scopes and options.

As Heli-One provides maintenance for a variety of aircraft types, the Avionics shop also is able to support a large range of OEMs such as:
  • Rockwell Collins (Auth. Dealer)
  • Cobham L3 (Auth. Dealer)
  • Thales
  • Universal Avionics (Auth. Dealer)
  • Zodiac
  • Penny & Giles
  • Ducane
  • Mahle
  • Honeywell (Auth. Dealer, Service Center)

Over time, Heli-One Norway has fostered collaborative relationships with a number of these OEMs and have become Authorized Dealers or Service Centers. This speaks to the technical mastery the shop has in providing maintenance, repair, and overhaul services. For example - the shop is an Authorized Spectrolab Searchlight Service Center and has completed over 200 repair projects and is one of five global service centers (apart from the OEM).
