Doppler Replacement

Heli-One is developing a GPS-augmented AHRS solution to replace the Doppler unit in
Airbus AS332L/L1 (with auto hover function). The new AHRS solution is more reliable,
stable and lighter than the current Doppler Unit and is compatible with auto hover functions.

Description of modification

The current doppler system is unstable over homogenous surfaces such as calm sea states and cannot provide consistent radar return. The lack of reliable data is unsafe for crew and is detrimental for mission success. The system is also heavy and increasingly expensive to maintain. The doppler will be replaced by an attitude and heading reference system (AHRS) and one ARINC 429 converter. The new system will feed flight director coupler and hover meters with ground speed. AHRS will be augmented with GPS data from the aircraft's flight management system.
